Eye on the Sparrow

Any night I’m privileged to have my toddler niece sleep beside me is always a ‘watch night.’ She tosses to and fro on the bed and every single time she does that, my eyes snap open. Last night was not an exception. Whenever she tossed, my eyes opened and I would ‘re-arrange’ her from whatever awkward position she had placed herself. Then, at some point in the wee hours, she woke up and asked for water. I took her to the kitchen and gave her some water to drink, then brought her back to bed but she chose not to go back to sleep. Though I felt sleepy and would have loved to get right back to sleep (the bit I could get before she started tossing again….hehe), the best I could do was take little naps as my eyes kept popping open at intervals to check on her ‘late-night activities.’ This I did, till she eventually fell asleep – in short, I practically watched over her all night – I was her watchman!

I am not complaining – far from it! I love to babysit and I do it with all pleasure. What I’m actually trying to get across is the thought that occurred to me as I reflected on this experience: “God does same for you.” Do you know that God watches over you exactly like that? He does not sleep, He doesn’t even slumber, He does not shift His position, He simply stays and watches over you. When you put yourself in an awkward place, He comes to get you and puts you where you should be. Whatever you do, He is keeping watch over you because trust me, if He wasn’t keeping watch, you can’t begin to imagine the million and one horrible things that would have happened to you!

So, the next time you’re having a blue day and you’re tempted to think God is nowhere in sight, remember what Jesus said in Matthew 10:29-31 (NLT), “What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.” He’s got His eye on the sparrow, and because you are more valuable, He’s got His eye glued to you.

I love this hymn, which clearly depicts the message I’m trying to pass across. Let’s share it together….

Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come
Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heaven and home
When Jesus is my portion, my constant friend is He
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me

Let not your heart be troubled, His tender word I hear
And resting on His goodness, I lose my doubts and fears
Though by the path He leadeth, but one step I may see
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me

Whenever I am tempted, whenever clouds arise
When songs give place to sighing, when hope within me dies
I draw the closer to Him, from care He sets me free
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me

I sing because I’m happy
I sing because I’m free
For His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me
