Did You Think to Pray?

baby-prayingIf you ask a youngster what prayer is, the response will likely be, “Prayer is TALKING to God.”

Yes, it’s as simple as that. Prayer is simply talking to God. It is conversing with God. It is not a tedious religious activity, it is simply communicating with your Heavenly Father.

I know many people might be wary of prayer because for some reason, we’ve been made to see prayer as some sort of ritualistic religious activity. We’ve probably been told that if we have not prayed for one hour at a stretch, or spend thirty minutes on a prayer point, then we do not know how to pray or tarry in God’s presence. Some, who have not arrived at the point where they can pray for more than few minutes get frustrated at this;  they consider prayer as a tedious activity and discard the idea altogether.

Not so, friends! Consider how a youngster, in child-like faith, prays to God. It doesn’t take forever, but it is heart-felt. The prayer of a child, although few-worded, comes from somewhere deep inside the child, where he/she connects with God in absolute faith and trust. It is good to be able to pray endlessly. It is perfect, if you can tarry in the place of prayer for hours unending. However, if all you can do is few minutes, you are not doing less praying. Do not be discouraged by the amount of praying you can do per time, whether for long hours or short minutes, the important thing is for you to pray.

You see, prayer is talking to God and He is your Father so He loves to hear your voice. You can talk to Him anytime, anywhere, and you can do so as much as you want or as often as you can. You can talk to Him about ANYTHING. I want you to understand that it is expedient to learn the art of talking to your Heavenly Father by praying. Imagine how awkward it would be if you and your dad don’t ever talk, especially if you are dependent on him! How would you communicate your needs to him? How would you express your feelings to him? How would you understand his own feelings? How would you know what he expects of you? How would you seek his counsel and instructions? How would you ask for his help? How? How?? How???

God longs to have a relationship with you through prayer. He wants to hear you and speak to you in return. As I said earlier, you don’t have to know how to pray long prayers, at least for starters. The more you learn and practice the art, the more you enjoy the communication, and the longer it lasts. I encourage you, today, to pray……for five minutes, ten minutes, fifteen minutes, twenty minutes, longer hours, however you can, as long as you are talking to God.

The lyrics of this song capture my thoughts:

Ere you left your room this morning,
Did you think to pray?
In the name of Christ our Savior,
Did you sue for loving favor,
As a shield today?

O how praying rests the weary!
Prayer will change the night to day;
So when life seems dark and dreary,
Don’t forget to pray.

When you met with great temptation,
Did you think to pray?
By His dying love and merit,
Did you claim the Holy Spirit
As your guide and stay?

When your heart was filled with anger,
Did you think to pray?
Did you plead for grace, my brother,
That you might forgive another
Who had crossed your way?

When sore trials came upon you,
Did you think to pray?
When your soul was bowed in sorrow,
Balm of Gilead did you borrow
At the gates today?
